4. Base Camp at Kāʻanapali Beach

Hawaii 2021

Day 4

We considered two options in the morning. 1) driving to the Honolua Bay, which is only a 15 minute drive, or 2) just sit on the beach all day, right in front of our hotel, so we didn’t have to drive anywhere. Both Kate and Marie were on board with that last lazy option.

From a hotel employee we learned that Bruce Willis was at the hotel, shooting a movie “Paradise City” with John Travolta. We were joking that it was the perfect time because nobody would recognize them wearing their COVID masks.

While we were waiting in line to rent two umbrellas and three beach lounge chairs, a lady waiting in line behind us said that the hotel is at 100% capacity. If that’s the case we probably should book a snorkeling boat trip as soon as possible. We went online and yup, everything was booked till Thursday so we made a reservation with Teralani Sailing Adventures for that day.

After our base camp was setup on the beach, I told Kate I would just run and jump into the ocean at high speed. Normally I’m a wuss when it comes to going into the ocean (especially in San Diego), but hey, the water is not that cold here. I stood up, straightened my back, put my chin up and said “Today I’m not a wuss”. Both Marie and Kate were joining me. We ran and dove. Kate was laughing hard about the whole ordeal. As normal, Marie and Kate tried to drown me.

After surviving my family we headed back to our base camp. That’s where we all did a lot of reading over a couple of hours. It was nice to be out of the sun under the umbrellas.

At some point Kate and Marie went back in the water and Kate called me. She said that if I ran into the ocean again they wouldn’t try to drown me. So I did and they kept their end of the deal. A guy in the water said he thought someone was in trouble and that I was going to go for a rescue, Baywatch style.

I noticed bright lights in three rooms at the top floor of one of the hotel buildings. Probably the movie set! Now I want to see it in the theater as a shot from those rooms could show me running like David Hasselhoff into the ocean.
