3. Maluaka Beach
Hawaii 2021
Day 3
After packing our snorkel gear and putting on our bathing suits we left for Maluaka Beach. It was a 45 minute drive from our hotel. The parking lot was quite full already but still some spots left. We found the beach and put our stuff down on a patch of grass right next to it, under the shade of a tree. Kate wanted to go in the water without snorkel gear and just play around a little first. The water still felt a bit cold but we got used to it fast. We went back to get our snorkel gear and I also took my GoPro in its water proof casing.
We all started snorkeling but both Marie and Kate had troubles with their snorkels: they are the kind with a valve on top, so when you submerge completely it should prevent water coming in. However, they didn’t work that well and they couldn’t blow the water out either. I don’t like those: just give me (and I guess for them too) a classic snorkel with an open top, with which you can easily blow the water out. Forget the always malfunctioning valve ones. So Kate and Marie headed back and I continued. I swam a little further off shore where I found more coral on big rocks and red pencil sea urchins. I saw more new fishes than I witnessed yesterday, including a group of light blue fishes sitting together on the sandy bottom. That looked funny as if they were having a meeting or something. I recorded a couple of videos where I dove under and swam between the coral covered rocks.
When I crawled back on the beach and met with Marie and Kate we decided to grab some lunch, with chickens all around us. I checked if perhaps we could go on a hike nearby but Kate was too tired and falling asleep on the backseat.
Back at the hotel we played shuffle board at the Lanai restaurant with some variations that Kate came up with - including sliding all the sliders at once for both players. We walked over to Whaler’s Village and bought a classic snorkel. Hopefully this one is going to work for Kate!
Back in the room I researched some hikes and found the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakalá National Park, with water falls, a bamboo forest and awesome views. It’s a more than two and half an hour drive but probably worth it! The funny thing is that according to Google Maps the last 30 miles is about 1.5 hours of driving; I wonder why? Well, we would find out on day 9…
