Construction of the California Southern Railroad between National City and Barstow started in 1881 in National City. Because of the water that Cottonwood Creek provided, steam locomotives would stop here and historic downtown Encinitas (named after the local small oak Encinitos) was born in the same year. The train depot was built in 1887, modeled after the Carlsbad train depot which was built a year earlier. Initially located near the current Encinitas train station, it was moved to Leucadia (bordering with Encinitas) in the early 1970’s after being closed in January 1969. It now houses Pannikin Coffee and Tea.
