My wife, daughter and I visited the Netherlands this month and stayed in Maastricht, an old city I grew up near. Maastricht, the capital of the province of Limburg, came about from a Roman settlement. The Romans built a bridge over the river Meuse (Maas in Dutch) in the first century. I love the city because history is so abundant here: from Roman settlement remains to the oldest church in the Netherlands (the 11th century Basilica of Our Lady peeking out above the tree tops in the photo above), to modern additions like the "High Bridge", a pedestrian bridge crossing the Meuse (photo below). The city is also known for its "Treaty of Maastricht" from which the Euro currency was born.

Congratulations to my brother Barry who started his own landscape architecture business! During our visit to the Netherlands this month, I photographed several projects he designed while still working at Bureau Verbeek, which included "The icons of the Clemens Domain" (below) in which backlit images of saints are embedded in a road and the staircase in Landgraaf (above) which is the longest outdoor staircase in the Netherlands.

We've made it back from the Netherlands just in time to install my pieces for Pop Up Art A New Experience at Coolest Shoes in California at 2984 State St and First Team Realty at 500 Grand Ave in Carlsbad Village. This program is supported by the City of Carlsbad and managed by the Carlsbad Village Association to connect the art sector with the businesses sector. My two pieces are “The Classroom” , which is a hand colored piece from the school at the ghost town Bodie and “Joshua Tree 2019”, in a Roma frame showing snow in one of my favorite National Parks.
